Pointers win five-set thriller over Pioneers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's volleyball team needed all five sets on Tuesday evening but the Pointers came away with a 3-2 victory over the Pioneers of UW-Platteville. The Pointers won 28-26, 24-26, 25-22, 14-25, 15-13.

A back-and-forth battle from the start, the first set needed extra points to determine a winner, but a Kati Rau (Dorchester, WI/Colby) kill gave the Pointers the 28-26 victory in the opener.

The Pioneers answered back in the second set, hitting .222 with 20 kills to even the match at 1-1.

The Pointers dominated for much of the third set and went up 2-1 with a 25-22 victory.

The fourth set was all Pioneers, as UWSP committed 11 attack errors in the set to aid in the UWP 25-14 victory.

In the decisive fifth set, the teams again battled back-and-forth until the Pointers managed to pull away at the very end, winning on a block by Rau and Cassidy Kohlhagen (Racine, WI/Union Grove).

As a team the Pointers hit .187 on the evening, led by 16 kills from Sarah Wildish (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls). Morgan Bartkowiak (Slinger, WI/Slinger) chipped in with 11 and Allison Davis (Rochelle, IL/Rochelle Township) added nine. Alexis Hartman (Deer Park, IL/Lake Zurich) registered a team-high 50 assists.

Three Pioneers finished with double-digit kills, led by Stephanie Kirchner who registered a match-high 23.

UW-Stevens Point (20-5, 6-1 WIAC) returns to action on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20 at the Elmhurst College Tournament in Elmhurst, Ill. The Pointers will face host Elmhurst along with Wheaton (Ill.), Haverford and Millikin.
