STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Three players scored in double figures on Saturday afternoon as the ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team rebounded with a 64-60 victory over 23rd-ranked UW-Eau Claire.
The visiting Blugolds took the lead after the opening tip and held it for much of the first half until the Pointers were able to knot the score at 15-all with 6:55 remaining off a
Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) jumper. The Pointers took their first lead of the game just over a minute later on a
Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) jumper.
Eau Claire quickly answered to retake the lead, but thanks to a 7-0 run to close the half, the Pointers pulled in front to take a five-point lead, 26-21, at halftime.
A 9-2 run to open the second half helped UWSP build its largest lead of the night, 35-23 with 18:08 remaining.
The Blugolds slowly chipped away at the UWSP lead down the stretch, and with 1:39 remaining they cut the Pointers' lead to just two, 56-54.
Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) responded with a jumper to give the Pointers a four-point cushion and the Pointers were able to answer each Eau Claire basket down the stretch to secure the four point victory, 64-60.
Barber led the Pointers with 16 points on the evening while Averkamp and Tyler each added 14 in the victory.
Eau Claire's Callie Halama led all scorers with 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting.
UW-Stevens Point (12-2, 4-1 WIAC) returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 11 with a match-up against the Blue Devils of UW-Stout. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Berg Gym.
