STEVENS POINT, Wis. –
Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) scored a career-high 31 points and went a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line on Saturday evening as the 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team picked up an 85-74 victory over the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire.
Five ties and eight lead changes in the game's opening half kept either team from gaining much control until UW-Stevens Point tacked on three baskets in the final minute to pull in front by six, 37-31, at intermission.
In the second half, the Pointers quickly pushed their lead to 15 points and held the lead the rest of the way.
Eau Claire pulled to within two, 56-54, with 9:45 remaining but a T. Tillema three-pointer quickly pushed the UWSP lead back to five as the Pointers controlled the game the rest of the way to secure the 11-point victory.
UW-Stevens Point held a 24-12 advantage on points in the paint on the evening, but Eau Claire held a 33-31 advantage on the boards, including a 13-2 edge on the offensive glass.
T. Tillema added four rebounds and two assists to his 31-point effort while
Jordan Brezinski (Muskego, WI/Muskego) chipped in with 18 points and
Jordan Giordana (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) added 11 including three three-pointers.
Three Blugolds scored in double figures, led by Dustin Kalien's 16 points.
UW-Stevens Point (11-3, 4-1 WIAC) returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 11 in Menomonie with a 7 p.m. match-up with UW-Stout.
