SUPERIOR, Wis. -
Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) tallied a career-high 25 points, connecting on 6-of-7 three-pointers, as the 12th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team ran away with an 85-67 victory against the UW-Superior Yellowjackets on Saturday afternoon in Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
UWS's Bri Davis gave the Yellowjackets an early lead, scoring a layup on the opening possession, but the Pointers did not wait long to erase the deficit.
Barber and
Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) knocked down back-to-back threes and
Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) capped off a 12-2 run as UWSP took a 12-4 lead early in the first.
The Pointers continued to build on their first-half lead, increasing their advantage to 17 points on a Tyler layup with just over one minute remaining.
UWSP took a 43-27 advantage into the break as it connected on 5-of-7 three-pointers in the half and 8-of-10 free throws.
The Yellowjackets battled early in the second half, but could not gain any ground on the Pointers. Barber knocked down her sixth three-pointer of the game, one off the school record, to increase the UWSP lead to 60-38 with 13:24 left in the half.
Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion) gave UWSP a 28-point lead, its largest of the game, on a three-pointer with 6:56 remaining and the Pointers cruised to an 85-67 victory.
Barber led all scorers with 25 points on 8-of-13 from the field. The junior also added a team-high six rebounds and recorded four assists and two steals.
Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) (16),
Liz Althoff (Darien, WI/Clinton) (13) and Bandow (12) also scored in double figures for the Pointers. Olp turned in a game-high six assists.
Connie Urmanski led UWS with 13 points while Sally Linzmeier added 12 and Bri Davis chipped in with 11.
UWSP shot 48.4 percent from the field and connected on 58.8 percent of its three-pointers while holding UWS to 33.3 percent from the field.
UW-Stevens Point (17-3, 9-2 WIAC) returns to action on Wednesday at it travels to Platteville to take on the Pioneers in conference play. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
