STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) scored a career-high 24 points to lead the 12th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team to an 80-58 win over UW-Whitewater Wednesday night in Berg Gym.

The first half was a seesaw battle with four lead changes and two ties. Late in the half, UWSP went on a 13-0 run, sparked by a pair of threes by junior guard Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.). The Pointers took advantage of several Whitewater miscues, scoring 15 points off turnovers, to take a 36-23 lead into the locker room. Averkamp also made her presence felt in the first half, tallying 12 of the team's 36 points.

UWSP started out hot in the second half and with 17 minutes to go in the half held a 19-point lead. The Warhawks fought their way back, chipping away at the Pointers' lead. With seven minutes to go, Whitewater cut the lead to nine with Stevens Point leading 61-52.

A Brooke Allen (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) three followed by a Warhawk technical foul and another Allen three-pointer swung the momentum back in UWSP's favor.

UWSP went on the 19-6 run in the last five minutes of the half cruise to an 80-58 victory.

UWSP outscored the Warhawks 42-20 in the paint and shot an impressive 52.6 percent (30-for-57) from the field and 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from the three-point line.

The Pointers' stingy defense also forced 25 Whitewater turnovers, thanks in part to 16 UWSP steals.

Averkamp led all scorers with a season-high 24 points while Barber added 18 and Allen chipped in 10. Barber also tallied a game-high 11 points.

Allen and Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion) also tied career-highs for assists, recording five and seven assists, respectively.

Mary Merg led the Warhawks with 14 points while Cortney Kumerow added 11.

UWSP (16-3, 8-2 WIAC) will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 28 as it travels to UW-Superior for a men's and women's doubleheader. The women tip-off at 3 p.m. with the men following at 5 p.m.
