STEVENS POINT, Wis. –The 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team celebrated National Championship Day with a 71-59 win over UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon at Berg Gym.
Saturday's game recognized the 25th anniversary of the 1987 NCAA National Championship and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 National Championship. Members of both teams were honored at halftime.
With the legends in the stands, the Pointers started out strong against the 17th-ranked Falcons, taking a seven-point lead eight minutes into the game.
The Falcons came charging back, thanks to several Point turnovers, and tied the game at 15. After a number of ties and lead changes, UWSP took a 26-24 lead into the locker room.
The second half started just as the first half finished, with two more ties and lead changes before the Pointers started to take control. However, after UWSP took an 11-point lead with under 12 minutes to go, the Falcons fought back, pulling within two with nine minutes left in the game.
Sparked by a
Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) jumper, the Pointers took control for good and held a double-digit lead for most of the last five minutes of the game to cruise to the 12-point victory, 71-59.
Bandow and
Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) lead all scorers with 18 points each and both chipped in seven rebounds.
Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) and
Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion) added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) led the Pointers with nine rebounds.
Brittany Gregorich led the Falcons (14-4, 6-3 WIAC) with 14 points and Alise Holst added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
UWSP (15-3, 6-2 WIAC) returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 25 when it hosts UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m. in Berg Gym.
