LA CROSSE, Wis. – The 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team suffered its second conference loss Saturday, falling to UW-La Crosse 47-41 at Mitchell Hall.
The game went back and forth for much of the first half, with the score being tied six times. However, the Eagles finished the half on an 11-6 run to take a 25-20 lead into the locker room.
UWSP missed its first nine shots from the field to start the second half, allowing La Crosse to build a 14-point lead five minutes into the half. However, the Pointers fought back and pulled within one with 1:13 remaining on an
Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) layup.
The Eagles responded and nailed several key free throws in the remaining seconds to close out the game on a 6-1 run to defeat the Pointers 47-41.
UWSP shot 15-for-55 (27.3 percent) from the field and 0-for-11 from behind the arc.
Averkamp scored a team-high 12 points for UWSP while
Liz Althoff (Darien, WI/Clinton) and
Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) chipped in eight and six points, respectively.
Taylor Bahr (Caledonia, WI/Shoreland Lutheran) tallied a team-high eight rebounds.
UW-L's Kassie Robinson led the Eagles with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds.
UWSP (13-3, 5-2 WIAC) returns to action Wednesday as it hosts UW-Platteville in Berg Gym. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
