STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Pont volleyball team did something it had not done in 26 years on Wednesday evening when it played host to the 21st-ranked Warhawks of UW-Whitewater.
The Pointers volleyball team (8-5, 1-0 WIAC) handed the visiting Warhawks a 3-0 defeat in the conference opener for both teams. The win by the Pointers was the first for a UWSP squad against UWW since 1985.
The Pointers were in control for much of all three sets on the evening, In the opening set the Pointers trailed only twice, once at 1-0 and again at 13-12. Down by one , the Pointers closed out the set thanks to Warhawk miscues to win 25-22.
In the second set, stellar serving by
Kati Rau (Dorchester, WI/Colby) led to a 9-0 early lead for the Pointers, one that proved to be too much for Whitewater to overcome. The Warhawks tied the score at 22-22 but the Pointers regrouped and took the second set 25-23.
In the third set, after receiving a three point advantage for a team delay on Whitewater, the Pointers built an early 12-4 lead and coasted from there to the conference opening victory.
Sarah Wildish (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) and
Christina Brinkman (Bristol, WI/Westosha Central) each tallied 10 kills on the evening for the Pointers while
Morgan Bartkowiak (Slinger, WI/Slinger) chipped in with eight. Wildish added three service aces and 16 digs on the evening while
Ally Groth (Germantown, WI/Germantown) had a team-high 18 digs.
Alexis Hartman (Deer Park, IL/Lake Zurich) led the way with 32 assists.
Alivia Holman led Whitewater with eight kills.
UW-Stevens Point will face UW-Eau Claire in another WIAC match-up on Friday, Sept. 23. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Berg Gym.
