STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team used two goals from
Jessica Ruch (Fond du Lac, WI/Fond du Lac) to open the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) portion of their schedule with a 2-1 victory over UW-Eau Claire on Saturday afternoon.
The visiting Blugolds (4-2, 1-1 WIAC) struck first in the game's 23rd minute, as Katie Richter headed in a corner kick from Sam Gilbert, giving Eau Claire the early 1-0 edge.
Ruch answered back just three minutes later for the Pointers, sending home a rebound off a
Sammy Greer (Rubicon, WI/Hartford) shot, knotting the score at 1-1.
Ruch put the Pointers in front for good in the 51st minute, this time scoring on a breakaway and beating UW-Eau Claire goalkeeper Nina Behrenbrinker.
The Pointers defense held on from there, turning away several Eau Claire rushes in the game's final minutes to secure the league victory.
Goalkeeper
Brittany Marx (Washburn, WI/Washburn) tallied four saves on the afternoon to earn her fifth victory of the season.
UW-Stevens Point (5-1, 1-0 WIAC) continues its six game home stretch on Wednesday, Sept. 21 with a 4:30 p.m. match-up against No. 4 Wheaton (Ill.).
