ST. PAUL, MN – The 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team dropped its non-conference season opener on Thursday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the Tommies of the University of St. Thomas.

“It's disappointing,” said head coach Sheila Miech, who enters her 25th season at the helm of the women's soccer program. “We had a lot of good opportunities, especially in the first half, but we just didn't put the ball away. It's frustrating to lose a game when you out-shoot a team in the first half like we did.”

After a scoreless first half in which the Pointers held the advantage in shots, 6-3, the Tommies put the game's only goal on the board in the 54th minute. The goal came off a rebounded shot by the Pointers that deflected off the post and was rushed the opposite way by St. Thomas' Nicole Sheehan. Sheehan dished to Katy Scherer for the lone score.

The Pointers' Brittany Marx (Washburn, WI/Washburn) h tallied two saves on the day as the Tommies managed just three shots on net. UST goalkeeper Allie Byron stopped all nine of UWSP's shots on target for the game to secure the shutout victory.

“We'll have to learn our lesson from this one and move forward,” said Miech. “This only makes us stronger. We need to move on and get ready for Gustavus on Saturday.”

The Pointers return to the pitch on Saturday, September 3 when they head back to the land of 10,000 lakes for a match-up with Gustavus Adolphus. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. in St. Peter, MN.
