STEVENS POINT- Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton)'s eight RBIs helped lead the UW-Stevens Point baseball team past St. Norbert University, 21-7, Tuesday afternoon as the Pointers won their seventh straight game.
The eighth-ranked Pointers (26-8) got things rolling right away, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first to take a 7-0 lead after one complete.
After Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) started the game with a base hit and stolen base and the next two batters reached base by a hit by pitch and walk, Gerber got his first RBI of the game with a fielders choice ground out giving the Pointers a 1-0 lead. Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) helped cap off the bottom of the first as his single up the middle plated a pair of Pointers, giving them the early seven run advantage.
Green Knights starter Nick Schadrie had a difficult time with the Pointers bats as he gave up seven runs, recording just two outs.
The Green Knights made things interesting as they brought the score to 8-5 after four and a half innings of play.
The Pointers answered in the bottom of the fifth with six more rungs, highlighted by a Gerber grand slam.
Gerber picked up his sixth RBI of the game with an RBI groundout in the sixth then hit a two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh. On the day Gerber went 2-for-6 with eight RBI, a home run, and a double. Douglas also had a big day, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Cody Koback (Plover/SPASH) continued his hot streak at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Leftfielder Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) also had a pair of hits and scored three runs as the Pointers first five hitters were a combined 11-for-22 with 14 RBIs and 13 runs scored.
Eric Van Beck (Hartland/Arrowhead) picked up his second win of the season for the Pointers as he threw one and two thirds inning of relief, giving up one run. Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) got the start for the Pointers, throwing three and a third while giving up four runs and striking out two.
Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) threw a pair of scoreless relief innings, as he struck out the side in the sixth inning. Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran) threw a scoreless eight inning, while Nash Bell (Oconomowoc, WI/Oconomowoc) got the final three outs for the Pointers.
The game was all about the hit batsmen and walks as there were a combined 14 walks and eight hit batters. The Pointers also were very aggressive on the bases as they stole seven bases, with Douglas stealing three and Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) swiping a pair of bags.
The Pointers return to action this weekend, as they will host UW-Stout in a pair of doubleheaders. The first doubleheader will take place Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at University Field.
The Pointers control their own destiny this weekend for a WIAC Championship as they enter the final weekend of play one game ahead of UW-Whitewater in the conference standings.
