Season ends with 2-1 loss in NCAA Regionals

Box Score

WHITEWATER – The UW-Stevens Point baseball season came to an end on Friday afternoon, just hours after the team had extended their season with a 5-1 win over Hamline. The Pointers (34-10) fell 2-1 to UW-Whitewater, their second loss of the double elimination Midwest Regional.

UW-Stevens Point struck first in the top of the first inning as Cody Koback (Plover/SPASH) doubled and came around to score on a Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) single.

UWSP starter Zach Wendorf (Merrill, WI/Merrill) held the Warhawk offense in check, not allowing a run until hitting the leadoff batter in the sixth inning. Later in the inning the hit batter came around to score on a Pointers error and Whitewater pushed another run across with two outs in the inning to take a 2-1 edge.

The Pointers put a runner on third in the top of the seventh but were unable to bring the run in. After a 1-2-3 eighth, the Pointers again put the tying run in scoring position in the top of the ninth but Whitewater's Jeff Donovan forced the final groundout to give the host Warhawks the victory.

Koback and Jirschele tallied four of the Pointers nine hits in the loss and Jirschele drove in the lone run. Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North) suffered the loss, his first and only of the season, pitching 0.2 innings of relief in the sixth. Wendorf did not factor in the decision and senior #Scott Williams pitched a perfect final two innings, striking out one.

The UW-Stevens Point baseball team graduates eight seniors from the 2011 squad, many of whom have left their mark on the Pointers record book. Senior lefthander Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) graduates as the school's all-time leader in strikeouts with 267. Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) finishes his career with the record for career games with 213. Williams set the mark for career wins with 27 and ranks in the top-5 in single season innings, single-season strikeouts, career decisions, career innings, career strikeouts and career winning percentage.
