WHITEWATER – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team stranded 14 runners on base and were unable to capitalize on an early 1-0 lead as they fell 3-2 to the Saints of the College of St. Scholastica in the second game of the 2011 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Thursday afternoon at Prucha Field.
The loss snaps a 14-game winning streak by the Pointers (33-9).
UW-Stevens Point took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) scored on a Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) sacrifice fly. The Pointers then loaded the bases but were unable to push any more runs across before Scholastica starter Kyle Jensen ended the threat.
Scholastica tied the game and then took a one-run lead in the home half of the first inning off starter Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door).
In the fourth the Pointers came just inches away from tying the score but #Kevin Thomas was gunned down at home plate to end the Pointers half of the inning with the score still 2-1 in favor of the Saints.
The Pointers put runners into scoring position in the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings but were only able to push one run across in the ninth, but it was too little to late as Scholastica's run in the seventh proved to be enough to keep the score just out of reach and give the Saints the one-run victory.
Delorit, the Pointers all-time strikeout leader, took the loss, falling to 5-4 on the year. He struck out four and allowed three runs, two earned, in 6.1 innings of work. Scholastica's Jensen tallied the victory, his fourth, and Jake Nystrom earned the save.
Koback and Rennicke each notched three hits on the afternoon and Thomas added a pair in the loss.
UW-Stevens Point is still alive in the double-elimination tournament and will face Hamline University at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 20. The loser will be eliminated and the winner advances to play UW-Whitewater at 4 p.m.
