UW-Stevens Point Announces Athletes of the Year

STEVENS PIONT – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has announced its selections for Athletes of the Year and Freshman of the Year award winners for the 2010-11 seasons.

Male Athlete of the Year for a team sport was Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) who helped lead the men's basketball team to a 26-4 record and a berth in the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 in his final season with the Pointers. The senior finished the season averaging 11.4 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per contest and ranks 15th on the all-time scoring list with 1,288 career points. Hurd was named to the All-WIAC First Team in 2011 along with an honorable mention selection in 2010 while serving as team captain both in 2011 and 2010. The native of Portage led the team to a 102-20 record in his four years as UWSP won the WIAC Regular Season Championship in 2009 and 2011, WIAC Tournament Championship in 2009, 2010, and 2011, and made NCAA Division III tournament appearances all four years, including a National Championship in 2010. Hurd also carries a 3.4 grade point average, majoring in broadfield social sciences.

Mary Jean Cornelius (West Bend/West) was awarded the Female Athlete of the Year for a team sport as she helped the women's soccer team post an 18-2-2 record and reach the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 last season. The West Bend native concluded her career with multiple awards including CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-America, NSCAA All-American, First Team All-Region, Best Attitude, and was a WIAC Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete nominee. Cornelius was also a three-time First Team All-WIAC selection, a three-time player of the week her senior season, and Most Valuable Player for the Pointers as a junior and senior. She was a member of regular season  and conference tournament championship teams in three of her seasons and helped the Pointers reach the NCAA tournament all four years, reaching the Sweet 16 three times. The midfielder played a key role in helping UW-Stevens Point set the school record for most shutouts in a season in 2010.

Receiving the Male Athlete of the Year for an individual sport was wrestler Ben Engelland (Neenah/Neenah). The senior from Neenah placed second at the NCAA Division III National Championships in March, capping off his 2010-11 season with a 25-2 record. In his career, England was a three-time NCAA All-American, two-time WIAC Champion, four-time All-WIAC selection, and a two-time National Wresting Coaches Association Scholar All-American. He posted a 107-15 career mark in four years and owns the best career winning percentage in Pointers wrestling history at .887.

The Female Athlete of the Year for an individual sport award went to Claire Roberts (Oakfield/Horace Mann) as a participant in track and field and cross country. In her final season, Roberts won the 3000-meter run this season and finished second in the women's mile at the WIAC meet. The senior from Oakfield qualified for the NCAAs in the distance medley relay, mile run, and 800-meter run this season. She placed 10th in the nation in the mile and ran the final leg of the distance medley relay placing fifth and earning All-American honors. While at the NCAA Regionals, she finished seventh helping the Pointers to a third-place finish and a bid for the NCAA Championships. Roberts currently holds the school records in the mile, outdoor 1500, and distance medley relay. 

Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) was named Freshman Athlete of the Year for a male team sport as he helped the baseball team reach the World Series in 2010. Used as a utility player, Douglas played in 46 , starting 40 in left field, center field, shortstop, and second base. The East Troy native batted .323 with 38 runs scored and 18 RBIs while posting a .420 on-base percentage. He also was four-for-five on stolen base attempts and made only one error in 93 chances.

Allie Tanzer (Chippewa Falls, WI/Chippewa Falls) was awarded Freshman Athlete of the Year for female team sport as she led the Pointers with 17 goals in her first season for the women's hockey team. She played in 27 games, scoring a total of 27 points and was voted to the NCHA All-Rookie team. The freshman from Chippewa Falls ranked ninth in the country in scoring among all rookies and also took home the NCHA Conference Player of the Week in the first week of the season.

The Freshman Athlete of the Year by a male individual was received by Dan Sullivan (Elkhorn, WI/Elkhorn) from the men's track and field and cross country teams. The Elkhorn native was named First Team All-WIAC in the mile and was the fifth man on the cross country team that won the WIAC and placed sixth in the country. He was also a provisional qualifier in the 800-meter run as well as the mile for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Track and field sprinter Jasmine Haines (East Troy, WI/East Troy) was named Freshman Athlete of the Year for an individual sport for a female for her efforts last season. She finished third in the 400-meter dash at the WIAC Championships as well as qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the distance medley relay finishing fifth.
