PLATTEVILLE – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team pushed its winning streak back to four games with a Saturday sweep, taking both games of a doubleheader against the Pioneers of UW-Platteville at Kendall Murray Field. The Pointers (23-8, 14-4 WIAC) took game one 9-4 and won game two 15-3 in seven innings over the host Pioneers (8-25, 6-16 WIAC).
In game one the Pointer bats did the majority of their damage with two outs, as five of the 10 UWSP hits and seven of the nine runs cored came with two down. Four different Pointers tallied two hits including Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy), Cody Koback (Plover/SPASH), Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) and Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton).
UW-Stevens Point's Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) went eight innings to improve his record to 3-3, fanning nine batters and scattering six hits. Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) closed out the ninth, allowing three hits and two runs, one earned. He also recorded a strikeout.
Holding a 3-0 lead in the seventh, Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) put the game out of reach with one swing, sending a Justin Crotty offering over the left-field wall with the bases loaded for a grand slam.
A two-run home run by the Pioneers in the eighth made the UWSP lead 7-2 but a bases loaded walk and a fielder's choice in the ninth gave the Pointers a 9-2 edge and Herbst worked his way out of a ninth inning jam to preserve the victory.
In game two the host Pioneers plated three runs in the first but the UWSP pitching put the clamps on any scoring the rest of the way. The Pointers scored four times in the fourth inning, six times in the fifth and added five more runs in the sixth to complete the 15-3 run-shortened victory.
Zach Wendorf (Merrill, WI/Merrill) threw two innings in his third start of the season before giving way to Tyler Flood (Madison, WI/La Follette), who earned the victory, his second of the season. Flood threw four innings of two-hit ball, striking out three. Cain Trunkel (Neillsville, WI/Neillsville) threw a scoreless seventh, allowing just one hit.
Gerber and Barnes each tallied three hits on the afternoon, Koback was 2-for-4 with four RBIs including a three-run home run in the fifth and Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) finished the day with three RBIs.
The Pointers and Pioneers return to action on Sunday with another pair of games at Kendall Murray Field. First pitch is set for Noon.
