Pointers take three of four from 'Jackets

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

SUPERIOR – The 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon against the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior to seal the season series victory 3-1. The Pointers won the opener on Friday 10-2 before falling in the nightcap 12-2 in eight innings.

Scoreless through three innings the Pointers struck with a solo home run from Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead). In the sixth a Cody Koback (Plover/SPASH) sacrifice fly and a Sean Gerger single gave UWSP a 3-0 edge.

The Pointers pushed their advantage to 5-0 in the seventh off a Travis Tuschen (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) single and another single from Koback.

The lone Superior runs came in the bottom of the seventh off a Mitch Loegering home run.

From there, Scott Williams (Baraboo/Baraboo) shut the door, as the Pointers tacked on four more runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to earn the 10-2 victory.

Scott Williams (Baraboo/Baraboo) picked up his sixth victory, going the distance for the fourth time this season. He scattered three hits over nine innings and struck out a career-high 15 batters.

Tuschen finished the day 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs and Gerber finished the day with three hits.

In game two the Pointers fortunes changed as a seven-game winning streak came to a halt. The 'Jackets capitalized on four UWSP errors to score five unearned runs on their way to a split.

Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, just two earned, in 5.2 innings of work, striking out three.

Offensively the Pointer bats that had been hot all series cooled thanks to the performance of Superior's Nick Bursik. The hurler went the distance scattering eight hits over eight innings, striking out two. Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) and Luke Behm (Waupaca, WI/Waupaca) each tallied two hits in game two for the Pointers.

UW-Stevens Point (19-8, 10-4 WIAC) next take to the field on Wednesday, April 27 when they host UW-Oshkosh in the final two games of the season series. First pitch at University field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
