Late-inning heroics give Pointers series sweep

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

LA CROSSE – Justin Jirschele's (Clintonville) two RBI double in the ninth inning of game one and Sean Gerber's (Stoughton) two RBI single in the 11th inning of game two gave the UW-Stevens Point baseball team a sweep on Monday afternoon against the Eagles of UW-La Crosse.

The Pointers took game one 5-3 and won the nightcap 7-6 in 11 innings. The pair of victories gives UWSP a four game sweep for the weekend series pushed to Monday due to inclement weather Saturday.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the seventh inning, the Pointers tacked on an unearned run in the seventh thanks to an Eagle error and Gerber scored in the eighth on a Jared Surman (Kimberly) groundout, tying the game at 3-3.

In the ninth the Pointers got a leadoff single from Eric Fritz (Custer) and Cody Koback (Plover) reached on another Eagle miscue to set the stage for Jirschele. With his only hit of the game, Jirschele delivered a double to left field plating the go-ahead runs.

Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire) came on for the ninth and did not allow a hit to earn his eighth save of the season, tying the single season school record. Senior hurler Scott Williams (Baraboo) earned his fifth victory of the season, scattering 10 hits over eight innings, striking out a season-high 10 batters.

Offensively, Gerber led the way with three hits including a double and two singles.

In game two the Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the second inning but the Pointers pushed back in front in the sixth with a pair of runs driven in by Jordan Rennicke (Mequon) and Bryan Clark (Oshkosh)

Another Clark RBI groundout in the eighth gave the Pointers a 4-2 lead but the Eagles pushed across two runs off starter Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay) in the home half of the inning to knot the score at 4-4.

Scoreless ninth and 10th innings gave way to the 11th when Casey Barnes (Mequon) and Fritz reached base to set the stage for a double by Koback that drove in one run. An intentional walk of Jirschele loaded the bases for Gerber who delivered with a single down the right side giving, plating another two runs for UWSP.

In the home half of the 11th, the Eagles had runners on the corners with one out and plated one on a fielding error by the Pointers and another on a single down the right field line but Cam Seidl (Appleton) came on to get the final two outs and secure the series sweep.

Iverson earned the victory, pitching two innings of two hit baseball in relief of Delorit.

Offensively Fritz and Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) tallied three hits while Gerber tallied three RBIs and Clark added a pair of RBIs in the one-run victory.

UW-Stevens Point (16-7, 7-3 WIAC) is next scheduled to take the field on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22 against the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior in Superior. Be sure to check athletics.uwsp.edu for any schedule updates.
