Pointers break out bats for doubleheader sweep

LA CROSSE – The 17th-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team belted out 33 hits over two games to sweep a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon against the Eagles of UW-La Crosse, winning the opener 13-3 in eight innings and 16-12 in the nightcap.

Cody Koback (Plover/SPASH) picked up the win in the opener, scattering six hits over six innings, allowing three runs, two earned while striking out seven. Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) came on to throw two innings in relief, recording a strikeout while allowing one hit. 

Koback provided the majority of the offense as well, going 2-for-4 from the plate including a two-run home run in the seventh and a three-run home run in the eighth to aid in the 10 run victory. Bryan Clark (Oshkosh, WI/North) finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Steve Considine (Portage/Portage) added two hits and two RBIs. 

In game two the hits and runs kept coming, but this time the Eagles decided to join the party. Combined the teams lit up the scoreboard for 36 hits and 28 runs. 

Eight Stevens Point pitchers combined to aid in the Pointer victory with Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran) earning the victory and Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North) earning his seventh save of the season. 

Jordan Rennicke (Mequon/Homestead) did the damage at the plate in game two, finishing the day 4-for-6 with six RBIs. Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly), Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton), Max Mittelstaedt (Oshkosh, WI/Oshkosh North) and Clark each added two RBIs in the victory. 

The Pointers (14-7, 5-3 WIAC) and Eagles (14-9, 6-6 WIAC) return to action at North Campus Field on Monday to make up a doubleheader that was postponed from Saturday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
