Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

STEVENS POINT- The UW-Stevens Point baseball team got a strong outing from senior right-hander Scott Williams (Baraboo/Baraboo) in their first game of a doubleheader with UW-Oshkosh to gain a split with the Titans on Wednesday afternoon. The Pointers won the opener 10-2 but fell in the nightcap 3-1.

In the opener Williams had a three hit complete game outing in which he gave up just two runs to earn his fourth victory of the season in the 10-2 Pointer win. He retired the first 17 batters of the game before surrendering two runs in the sixth inning.

The Pointers took a 1-0 lead in the first game when Cody Koback (Plover/SPASH) scored. The Titans answered with two runs in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead.

The bats got going for the Pointers in the seventh inning after Jordan Rennicke (Mequon/Homestead) was hit by a pitch and Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) hit a two-run home run to give the Pointers a 3-2 lead.

The Pointers scored three more runs during the seventh, including two on a two-run triple by Koback. The triple gave Koback the Pointer career record for triples with 11, and the single-season record with six.

Four more Pointers scored in the bottom of the eighth as the Pointers belted out 10 hits and scored nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Williams finished with eight strikeouts as he tossed his third complete game of the season. Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) led the Pointers with three hits in game one, while Surman, Koback, and Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) each had a pair of hits.

In the second game the Pointers could not figure out Titan right-hander Jeremy Rubens as Rubens threw a complete game to give the Titans a 3-1 victory.

The Pointers did have 11 hits in the second game but stranded 12 base runners as Rubens got his third win of the season.

Gerber, Douglas, and Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) each had a pair of hits to pace the Pointer offense. The Pointers scored their lone run of the game in the fifth inning when Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) singled in Koback.

Gerber finished the day with a team high five hits, including a double in game two. Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) took the game two loss, throwing six solid innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out seven. Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North) threw the final three innings giving up no hits and struck out three.

The Pointers are now 3-3 in WIAC play, while the Titans improved to 6-4 in conference play. The Pointers return to action this weekend as they head to La Crosse for a four game series with the Eagles.
