Douglas Powers Pointers Past Grinnell

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) ripped a two out RBI single through the infield in the 8th inning to break a 2-2 tie and give the UW-Stevens Point baseball team a 3-2 victory over Grinnell College on Tuesday afternoon.

Closer Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North) came on to pitch a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save and freshman Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) picked up his first collegiate win in relief of starter Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls). Herbst threw five plus innings of two hit baseball, walking three.

Frederick came on to throw three complete innings of one hit ball, striking out one and not allowing an earned run.

Both of Grinnell's runs came on errant throws from the Pointers, one a failed pickoff at first base ant the other a botched play on a steal of third base.

Offensively, Kevin Thomas (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) finished the day 2-for-3 while Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) and Cody Koback (Plover/SPASH) each drove in runs in the fifth, Jirschele on a triple and Koback on a single.

UW-Stevens Point (3-2) returns to action Wednesday with a key in-region showdown with the University of St. Thomas at Lake Myrtle Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. eastern.
