Pointers Capture WIAC Title With Win Over Eagles

LA CROSSE - The UW-Stevens Point Men's Basketball Team used a strong second half to push there way past UW-La Crosse on Saturday afternoon, 79-71.

With the win the Pointers captured the outright WIAC regular season championship as they finished their conference season with a 14-2 record.

The title is the Pointers third in the past five seasons as they also won WIAC regular season championship in 2007 and 2009.

The Pointers and Eagles traded baskets in the first half as no team had a lead greater than seven points. After 20 minutes UW-La Crosse led the game 41-40.

The two teams then battled for the first eight minutes of the second half as the Eagles took a one point lead on a three point field goal by Tony Mane.

That would be the last time UW- La Crosse had a lead or tie in the game as the Pointers controlled the final 12 minutes to get the victory.

Jerrel Harris (Milwaukee/Dominican) led five Pointer players in double figures as he finished with a team high 17 points.

For the game the Pointers shot an impressive 63 percent (34-54) from the field. Also scoring in double figures for the Pointers were Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) (14), Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (12), DeVon Jackson (Milwaukee/Rufus King/Williston State) (12), and Nick Krull (Marshall/Marshall) (10).
Krull finished with a double-double as he also grabbed a game high 10 rebounds. Krull also had a team high three assists, as did Hurd.

The Eagles were led by Tony Mane who finished with 32 points.

The Pointers will return to action next Thursday night when they host a WIAC Semifinal Game at Bennett Court.

The Pointers will play whoever is the lowest seed remaining in the WIAC Tournament, so they could be squaring off against UW-La Crosse, UW-Platteville or UW-Superior on Thursday night.

With a win on Thursday the Pointers would host the WIAC Championship game on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
