STEVENS POINT- Senior Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) had 17 points to lead the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team past UW-Platteville, 82-54 Wednesday night at Bennett Court.

With the win the Pointers clinched a share of the WIAC title as UW-River Falls fell to UW-La Crosse on Wednesday.  The Pointers now control their own fate for the number one seed in the WIAC Tournament and can clinch that with a win or River Falls loss on Saturday.

The Pointers took awhile to get things going on Wednesday as they did not hold a lead until 2:17 left in the first half when Jordan Brezinski (Muskego, WI/Muskego) made a layup, was fouled and completed the three point play to give the Pointers a 30-28 edge.

The Pointers took that momentum and closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 37-30 lead into the break.

UW-Platteville shot 54 percent in the first half and had a nine point lead at one point as they opened up the game with a 13-4 run.

The Pointers then kept rolling in the second half as they outscored the Pioneers 45-24 in the final 20 minutes.  In the second half the Pointers shot 75 percent from the field as they made 18 of the 24 shots

Joining Hurd in double digits was Jerrel Harris (Milwaukee/Dominican) with 16 points and senior Vinny Ritchay (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) added 10 points and a team high seven rebounds.  Brezinski also add 11 points to help lead the Pointers.

Brezinski and Ritchay were key in leading the Pointers bench to outscore the Pioneers reserves 34-3.

Senior Nick Krull (Marshall/Marshall) led the Pointers with six assists and added six points in Senior Night at Bennett Court.

Krull, Ritchay, Hurd, and Scott Hoelzel (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) were the four seniors honored as they competed in their final regular season game at home.

The Pointers will try to win the outright WIAC Championship on Saturday as they travel to UW-La Crosse for a showdown with the Eagles.  Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.

The Pointers are guaranteed a first round bye in the WIAC Tournament and will play their first tournament game next Thursday, February 24th at 7:00 p.m. at Bennett Court.  Tickets go on sale Monday, Feb. 21 at the University Information and Ticket office on Reserve Street.  Please call 715-346-4100 for more information.
