STEVENS POINT- Jerrel Harris (Milwaukee/Dominican) scored a career-high 28 points and added eight assists to lead the Pointers past UW-River Falls Saturday at Bennett Court, 86-70.
The win by the Pointers moved them into a first place tie with the Falcons as both teams now have 12-2 WIAC records. Both teams have two conference games remaining.
The Pointers took a 41-33 lead into halftime as they shot an impressive 66 percent (16-24) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
Harris had 15 points at the break and Vinny Ritchay (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) helped spark the Pointers with eight first half points, including a pair of three pointers. Ritchay finished the game with 11 points.
For the game the Pointers shot 58 percent (29-50) from the floor and 35 percent (7-20) from three point range.
Four Pointers finished in double figures on Saturday as Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) (14) and Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (13) joined Harris and Ritchay in scoring in double digits.
Hurd also had a game high eight rebounds as the Pointers had a 30-26 edge in the battle of the boards.
Jake Voeltz led the Falcons with 24 points as he was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Jontae Koonkaew added 15 points and five assists for UW-River Falls.
The Pointers will play two WIAC conference games next week as they try to finish with at least a share of the WIAC title. The Pointers will play their final regular season home game on Wednesday against UW-Platteville at 7 p.m. before traveling to La Crosse to finish out the regular season on Saturday.
Both the Pointers and UW-River Falls have already clinched opening round byes in the WIAC Tournament. If the two teams finish the season tied, the #1 seed will be determined by the WIAC tiebreaker scenarios that can be found on the WIAC website.
