Pointer women defeat Titans, 56-40

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team shot 51 percent in the second half overcoming a slow start, to defeat the Titans of UW-Oshkosh 56-40 Wednesday evening in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action at the Kolf Sports Center.

Neither team shot the ball well in the opening half. UW-Stevens Point shot 8-for-27 from the floor (.296) but held the Titans to an equally lackluster 6-of-29 (.207). UWSP leading scorer Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) was held scoreless in the opening half.

In the second half, Barber and the Pointers began to heat up, but not until the host Titans cut the Pointers lead to just three, 33-30, with 11:28 remaining. From there, the Pointers went on a 16-4 run to take a 49-34 lead with 4:03 remaining and never looked back, cruising to the 16-point victory.

Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) led all scorers with 15 points on 7-11 shooting and added six rebounds. Barber finished with 12 points, five rebounds and a team-high four steals.

Kelsey Mykelbust led the Titans with 11 points and nine rebounds. 

UW-Stevens Point (7-0, 2-0 WIAC) returns to action on Saturday with a nonconference match-up with Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Ill.  Game time is set for 2 p.m.
