STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The 21st-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team jumped out to an early lead en route to their second conference win, defeating UW-Oshkosh 66-52 Wednesday at Quandt Fieldhouse.
After
Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) scored the opening basket, the Pointers never looked back. UWSP maintained the lead the entire game, shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor. A stingy Pointers defense held the Titans to 20 percent from the field and 0-7 from behind the three point arc as UWSP took a 40-23 advantage into the locker room.
The Pointers came out strong in the second half, building at 20-point lead at the 13-minute mark. The Titans chipped away and cut the lead to nine with 1:44 remaining in the game, but the Pointers did not falter, nailing five of six from the charity stripe, giving UWSP a 66-52 victory.
Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) led the Pointers with 21 points, five rebounds and four steals. T. Tillema was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line and shot 50 percent from the field.
Trevor Hass (New London, WI/New London/Augustana (SD)) and D. Tillema added 12 points apiece for home squad.
John Flanigan led the Titans with 21 points while teammate Chad Mathwig was the leading rebounder of the night, tallying 13.
UWSP (6-1, 2-0 WIAC) will be back in action Saturday when the team travels to Rock Island, Ill. to take on the fourth-ranked Vikings of Augustana. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
