Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) scored 21 points, connecting on 5-of-9 three-pointers, as the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a convincing 85-47 victory over UW-Superior at Bennett Court on Saturday afternoon.
UWSP controlled the tempo early, opening an eight-point lead midway through the first half on a three-point play from
Joe Ritchay (Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Lincoln) for an early 17-9 advantage.
Despite a 6-2 Yellowjacket run, the Pointers had a 26-10 run of their own, taking a 45-25 lead into halftime.
In the second, UWSP added to their lead early, gaining a 25-point advantage through the first two minutes on a jumper by
Austin Ryf (Winneconne, WI/Winneconne). The Pointers defense stepped up in the second half, holding the Yellowjackets to 32 percent from the field while forcing seven turnovers.
Jordan Giordana (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) gave the Pointers their largest lead, 41, with 4:54 left in the game as UWSP cruised to a 38-point victory, 85-47.
Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) led the way with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Trevor Hass (New London, WI/New London/Augustana (SD)) tied a career-high with 20 points while setting career-highs in rebounds with nine and assists with six. Giordana also scored in double figures with 14 on 6-of-8 shooting.
Brendan Bauer led UWS in scoring with 10 points.
UWSP pressured UWS into 17 turnovers resulting in 26 points compared to six points on nine forced turnovers for the Yellowjackets. The Pointers shot a season-high 55.4 percent from the field, connecting on 31-of-56 attempts.
With the victory, the Pointers increased their home winning streak to 24 games and regular-season conference win streak to 11.
UW-Stevens Point (5-1, 1-0 WIAC) returns to action as it hosts UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday in conference play. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
