Pointers bounce back with win over Wellesley

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) scored a team-high 17 points and added seven rebounds as the seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team defeated Wellesley 62-43 at the Surf 'N Slam Tournament.
 
The Pointers (11-1) led from wire-to-wire Thursday evening, jumping in front just after the opening tip and ­­led by as many as 14 down the stretch on their way to a 10-point halftime lead, 34-24.
 
Wellesley cut the deficit to single digits, pulling within seven points at 34-27, minutes into the second stanza, but a Barber three-pointer quickly pushed the lead back to double digits. From there, UWSP extended the lead to as many as 20 on its way to a 19-point victory.
 
UW-Stevens Point shot 48 percent from the floor for the game and the Pointers turned 16 Wellesley turnovers into 26 points.
 
Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) chipped in with 11 points on the evening and Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion), Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) and Liz Althoff (Darien, WI/Clinton) each chipped in with eight.
 
Ashleigh Sargent led Wellesley (3-5) with 10 points.
 
UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 4 with a conference game at UW-River Falls. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
