Hass leads Pointers past Eagles, 81-70

Box Score MADISON, Wis. – Trevor Hass (New London, WI/New London/Augustana (SD)) scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in the second half as the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team improved their record to 8-2, defeating Edgewood College 81-70 Sunday afternoon at Todd Wehr Edgedome.

Coming off a Wednesday victory where the Pointers knocked off previously undefeated UW-Whitewater, they were faced with another undefeated opponent in the Eagles who entered the game with a 9-0 record.

Edgewood jumped out to a 16-10 lead with 12:57 remaining in the first half before the Pointers put together an 18-0 run for a 28-16 advantage in favor of UWSP.

Both teams battled back in forth in the next four minutes before the Pointers scored the last four points of the first stanza, taking a 40-28 lead into the break.

In the second half, UWSP committed seven turnovers on their first seven possessions allowing the Eagles to begin their comeback. Edgewood brought the deficit from 12 points to four before Hass connected on a three-pointer, putting the purple and gold up seven, 43-36.

The Eagles continued to cut the Pointers lead down as they shot 57.1 percent in the second half and at the 10:12 mark, took their first lead since the first half, 51-50, on a layup by Ben Wisniewski.

The game began to tighten up as the next three-plus minutes as it featured eight lead changes and four ties. Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) gave UWSP some breathing room as he connected on four free throws, putting the Pointers up three.

Hass and Jordan Giordana (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) increased the lead to 12 as they combined for three three-pointers over the next three minutes for a 74-62 advantage.

UWSP sealed the win in the final minutes as it converted 7-of-10 free throws for an 81-70 victory.

Hass lead all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting including 5-of-8 from beyond the arch. T.Tillema (18), Giordana (15), Jordan Brezinski (Muskego, WI/Muskego) (11) and Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) (11) also scored in double-digits for UWSP. T.Tillema also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and handed out a team best four assists.

Craig Cashton highlighted four Eagles' in double figures with 19 points helped by Wisniewski (13), Ken Faurote (11) and Derek Nkemnji (10).

On the afternoon, Edgewood shot 50 percent on the field to the Pointers 48.1 percent, but UWSP knocked down 10 threes compared to Edgewood's six. After UWSP held a 20-10 advantage in the paint during the first half, Edgewood held a 14-8 in the second.

UW-Stevens Point (8-2, 3-0 WIAC) returns to action on Thursday as it squares off against 14th-ranked University of St. Thomas in a nonconference matchup in Stevens Point. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
