WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team gave a valiant effort on Thursday evening, almost overcoming a 3-0 deficit late in the second half but was ousted from the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament by the top-seeded Warhawks of UW-Whitewater by a score of 3-2.
The Warhawks struck first in the game's 30th minute as Pamela Lisowe gave the tournament's top seed the 1-0 lead.
The WIAC's second-leading goal scorer Emily Gerber gave the Warhawks a 2-0 edge just three minutes later as she found the back of the net for her 13th goal of the season.
The Pointers defense was able to hold off Whitewater for the remainder of the first half and much of the second, until the Warhawks scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 70 minute mark off the foot of Christina Tooren.
The Pointers then mounted their comeback attempt, as
Sarah Vitale (River Falls, WI) and
Jessica Ruch (Fond du Lac, WI) each tallied goals within a minute of each other, to pull UWSP to within one, with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game.
But the Warhawks defense was able to hold off the final push by UWSP, as they held on for the victory.
UWSP goalkeeper
Brittany Marx (Ashland, WI) finished the evening with seven saves while her counterpart Jordan Myers tallied three.
UW-Whitewater will host UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, Nov. 5 in the league's championship game with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
UW-Stevens Point's season comes to a close at 11-8-0.
