Pointers fly past BlueJays

Box Score

ELMHURST, Ill. – The seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team pushed its record to 5-0 on Tuesday evening with a 65-48 victory over the BlueJays of Elmhurst College at R.A. Fagenel Hall.

Eight ties and four lead changes marked a back-and-forth battle in the opening half. Holding a one-point lead heading into the final minute, clutch baskets by Megan Lopez (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) and Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) gave the Pointers a five-point cushion, 30-25, heading into the break.

The Pointers slowly began to pull away in the second half, thanks to the hot shooting of Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.). Barber was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor in the second stanza, scoring 12 of her team-high 14 points as UWSP led by as many as 17 down the stretch.

Elmhurst could get no closer than 13 the rest of the way, as the Pointers rolled to the 17-point nonconference win.

Bandow and Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) each added 11 points each and Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) had a team-high six rebounds.

A stingy Pointers defense held the BlueJays to just 35 percent shooting from the floor for the game and just 14 percent (1-7) from three-point range on the night. Fiona McMahon led Elmhurst with 16 points off the bench.

UW-Stevens Point will open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday at home against UW-Superior. Game time is set for 3 p.m. as part of a women's and men's doubleheader.

The team will also be holding a raffle for two Packer tickets with the proceeds going to Project Embrace. Tickets are $10 and the winner will receive a pair of tickets to the January 1 Green Bay Packers versus Detroit Lions game.
