YORK, Pa. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team closed the game on a 12-1 run, taking home a hard fought 68-54 victory over host York in the 2011 White Rose City Classic Championship game Saturday afternoon at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
Both teams came out evenly matched in the first 17 minutes of the first half as either team could gain more than an eight-point advantage. Senior
Jordan Brezinski (Muskego, WI/Muskego) converted a three-point play to give the Pointers a 10-point lead with 2:14 remaining in the half.
The Spartans closed out the first on a 7-0 run, closing the gap to 31-28 in favor of the Pointers.
In the second half, York went on a 7-2 to claim the lead at 35-33 with 17:06 left in the contest. UWSP battled back and pushed its lead back to 10 with just over five minutes remaining.
Todd Maciejewski brought the Spartans within three with 2:22 left on the clock but UWSP connected on 12-of-14 free throws in the final two minutes for a 68-54 victory.
Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) led UWSP with 20 points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals. The junior connected on 12-of-14 free throws including 7-of-8 in the final two minutes. Brezinski was the only other Pointer in double figures with 18 points and controlled six rebounds.
Julian Watson (12) and Mo Oursler (10) led the Spartans in scoring.
UWSP took advantage of its free throw opportunities, connecting on 85 percent (17-20) compared to 50 percent (7-14) by York.
UW-Stevens Point (3-0) returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Collegeville, Minn., to face St. John's University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
