STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point women's basketball team jumped out to an 10-0 lead and never looked back as it cruised to a 72-39 victory over the Lions of Finlandia University in the Pointer Tip-Off Classic Friday evening.
UWSP pressured Finlandia into 21 first half turnovers resulting in 26 points. The Pointers committed seven turnovers but Lions could only capitalize with five points.
Two free-throws by
Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion) with 1:33 remaining in the first pushed the Pointers lead to 30, 45-15, heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Pointers went on another 10-0 run capped off by
Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West), pushing their lead to 55-15.
UWSP kept Finlandia in check the rest of the way out as the Lions could only come within 33 as the Pointers came away with a 72-39 victory.
Averkamp led all scorers with 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting in only 13 minutes of action.
Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) also scored in double figures with 10 while
Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) and
Jenna Pitt (Amherst, WI/Amherst) both chipped in with nine.
The Lions were led by Shaikiera Armstrong with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Finlandia committed 34 turnovers in the game resulting in 44 points for UWSP. After seven first half turnovers, the Pointers committed just three in the second half. The Pointers bench also held a 32-8 advantage in the game.
UW-Stevens Point (2-0) returns to action tomorrow afternoon as it wraps up the 2011 Pointer Tip-Off Classic as it take on Alverno College at 3 p.m.
