CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The 10
th-ranked UW-Stevens Point wrestling team finished in eighth place at the 2011 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals over the weekend, recoding victories over Cornell College (Iowa) and Wilkes University (PA).
The eighth-seeded Pointers won their opening match of the day one 22-10 against the ninth-seeded and 12th-ranked Rams of Cornell College. Joe Mileski (Gladstone, MI/Gladstone), Jordan Kust (Clintonville, WI/Shawano), Kris Magruder (Racine/Case), Jordan Schulte (Mosinee, WI/Mosinee), Ryan Conat (New London, WI/New London), Ben Engelland (Neenah/Neenah), and Chad Gregory (Lawton, OK/Lawton) each all tallied victories in the day's opening dual. Next up on day one for the Pointers was the nation's top-ranked program in Division III, Augsburg College. Kust, Ben Strobel (Neenah, WI/Neenah), Engelland and Matt Cuadra (Oshkosh, WI/West) each tallied victories for the Pointers but it was not enough to overcome the top-ranked Auggies. In day one's final action, the Pointers tallied their final victory of the NWCA event against Wilkes University. Kust, Strobel, Schulte, Conat, Engelland and Brandon Jochem (Hustisford/Hustisford) earned victories as the Pointers downed the 19th-ranked Colonels. Results
The win kept the Pointers alive in the tournament and advanced them to Sunday's action and a showdown with fifth-ranked Coe College (Iowa). Kust, Magruder, Engelland and Jochem each tallied victories for the Pointers but UWSP was unable to come away with the victory, falling 25-13. Results
The loss put the Pointers into the seventh place match at the 2011 National duals, where they squared off against seventh-ranked Concordia-Moorhead.
The showdown with the Cobbers pitted the nation's top-two wrestlers in 184 pounds, top-ranked Phil Moenkedick of Concordia-Moorhead and Ben Engelland (Neenah/Neenah). Moenkedick earned the victory in the closely contested contest, 4-0. Schulte and Jochem registered the lone victories of the match-up as the Pointers fell 29-6. Results
UW-Stevens Point (6-5) returns to action on Jan. 21 when they travel to conference foe and currently fourth-ranked UW-La Crosse. The match-up is set to begin at 7 p.m. in La Crosse.
