STEVENS POINT- The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team held UW-Oshkosh to 28 percent shooting on the evening as the Pointers held off the Titans to earn a 54-42 victory Wednesday night at the Berg Gymnasium.
The Pointers jumped out to a 14-4 lead with 10:51 to go in the first half. Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) powered the quick start with four points and four rebounds during the run.
The margin remained between eight and ten points the rest of the half as the Pointers took a 23-14 lead into the break. UW-Oshkosh shot just 23 percent (6-26) in the first half.
After the Titans Becca Diedrich hit a three to start the second half the Pointers went on a 12-2 run to take a 35-18 lead with 15:10 left in the game. Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) scored four of her six points during the run.
Oshkosh then answered with a 10-2 run of their own to make the score 37-28 with 10:18 remaining.
The Pointers took a 30 second timeout and then used a quick 4-0 run to push the lead back up to 13 points. From there, UWSP never looked back going on to the 54-42 victory.
Averkamp led the Pointers with 11 points and eight rebounds. Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) also added eight rebounds and Andrea Flease (New London/New London) had five assists and four steals.
The Pointers were playing without leading scorer and rebounder Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) who was out with an injury.
The win keeps the Pointers on top of the WIAC with a 4-0 record. They will take on second place UW-La Crosse on Saturday at the Berg Gymnasium at 5:00 p.m.
