Pointers Extend Streak to 10; Down Warhawks 66-47

Box Score

STEVENS POINT- Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team past UW-Whitewater 66-47 on Wednesday night at the Berg Gymnasium.

The win puts the Pointers in an excellent position to win the WIAC regular season title as they now sit two games in front of the Warhawks with six games to play.

Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) also had a big night for the Pointers as she finished with a game high 19 points and seven rebounds.

The Pointers and Warhawks played the game's opening 16 minutes close as the score was 21-18 with 4:06 to play in the first half. The Pointers then went on a 8-0 run to close out the half as Petersen had four points during the run to take a 29-18 lead into the break.

The Warhawks would make a couple runs in the second half but they got no closer than seven points as the Pointers rolled to the 19 point victory.

Andrea Flease (New London/New London) finished the game with game highs in assists with five and steals with six. The Pointers finished with 15 assists and forced 27 Warhawk turnovers.

Behind Petersen and Averkamp the Pointers had an edge in points in the paint as they outscored the Warhawks 32-20 in the paint.

The win was the 399th for Coach Shirley Egner at UWSP as she has a chance to become just the second coach in WIAC history to get 400 career wins Saturday when the Pointers will host UW-Superior at the Berg Gymnasium. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
