WHITEWATER – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team tallied two victories on Saturday afternoon and three individuals won their respective flight championships at the 2011 Border Brawl, hosted by UW-Whitewater.
In the Pointers opening match of the day, six wrestlers tallied victories against Harper College, highlighted by
Jordan Kust (Clintonville, WI/Shawano)'s technical fall at 133 pounds and
Kris Magruder (Racine/Case)'s major decision at 149 pounds.
Brad Kuehn (Hugo, MN/),
Shane Sweeney (Madison, WI/Edgewood),
Ben Strobel (Neenah, WI/Neenah) and
Ryan Conat (New London, WI/New London) also added individual victories in the win against the defending NJCAA National Champion. The Pointers took the match 24-15.
In the day's second match against 24th-ranked Elmhurst College, the eighth-ranked Pointers faced a back-and-forth battle but fell just short, 22-15. Kust, Magruder, Strobel, Jordan Schulte (Mosinee, WI/Mosinee) and Chad Gregory (Lawton, OK/Lawton) tallied victories by two major decision victories, a pin fall and a technical fall gave the Bluejays the victory.
In the final team action of the day the Pointers tallied three pins and a major decision victory to cruise to a 37-6 victory over Mount St. Joseph's. Kuehn, Kust, Sweeney, Magruder, Strobel, Bill Langford (Westosha, WI/Westosha Central), Conat and Steve Wozniak (Neillsville/Greenwood) tallied victories.
In individual action at 149 pounds, Koy Kleuskens tallied three victories including an 18-3 technical fall against Cam Loomis of Whitewater to capture the 'A' Flight Championship. Pat Conrad (Morton Grove, IL/Niles West) also advanced to the 'B' Flight final, only to fall by pin at 1:57.
Also in individual action, Brandon Jochem (Hustisford/Hustisford) tallied two major decision victories after a narrow 8-7 victory in the day's opening match to secure the 197 pound flight championship. Matt Cuadra (Oshkosh, WI/West) also secured an individual flight championship with a pin in just 28 seconds and two victories.
UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 25 when they host Division II UW-Parkside at 7 p.m. in Berg Gym. Parkside is ranked 16th in the nation in Division II.
