Dan Tillema's 24 Leads Pointers Past Titans

Box Score

OSHKOSH – Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) converted nine of his 16 shots from the floor on Saturday afternoon to help the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team sweep the season series against the Titans of UW-Oshkosh with a 74-70 victory at the Kolf Sports Center.

A defensive struggle despite both teams scoring in the 70's, UWSP's defense held the Titans to just 24 first half points, leading the game from the opening tip. The Pointers pushed their lead to double digits, going in front by 11 with 3:08 remaining in the first half and took a 32-24 edge into halftime.

In the second half the Pointers pushed their lead to 15 points before the Titans began to chip away at the lead. UWO cut the deficit to three, 70-67 with 41 seconds remaining but three free-throws by Jerrel Harris (Milwaukee/Dominican) and one by Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) sealed the four point victory.

The 70 points scored by the Titans was the third-highest point total allowed by the Pointers this season.

UWSP shot 49.1 percent for the game but finished just 17-of-28 (.607) from the free-throw line. Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) added four rebounds and four steals to his 24 point performance while Harris finished with 17 points and Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) added 11.

John Flanigan led the way for the Titans with 20 points and Brian Washington finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The 12th-ranked Pointers (15-3, 7-2 WIAC) return to action Wednesday, Jan. 26 when they travel to UW-Whitewater for a 7 p.m. match-up with the Warhawks.
