STEVENS POINT- Nick Kenney (Wixom, MI/Walled Lake Western) scored a pair of second period goals to help lead the Pointers to their first victory at the K.B. Willett Arena this season over the Falcons of UW-River Falls 3-1 on Friday night.
The Pointers faced a 1-0 deficit after the first period, despite outshooting the Falcons 16-9 in the first 20 minutes.
The Falcons got on the board 12:17 into the first period when Andy Inderieden put one past goalkeeper Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon).
The second period then proved to be the difference as the Pointers scored all three of their goals in the second 20 minutes to take a 3-1 lead into the third and final period.
Kenney got the scoring started for the Pointers when he found the back of the net off a rebound from a shot by Max Bobrow (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa). The goal was just 48 seconds into the second period.
Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) then scored on a four on three advantage for the Pointers. Suter scored off assists from Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) and Kent Detlefsen (Lakeville, MN/Rochester) to give the Pointers a 2-1 advantage.
The Pointer power play then struck again 13:54 into the period when Kenney put in his second goal of the night, another rebound goal of a Sean McNeely (Brooklyn Park, MN/Osseo) shot to give the Pointers a 3-1 lead.
That 3-1 lead would be all the Pointers would need as Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) and the Pointer defense held off the Falcons in the third period, including holding them scoreless over a five minute major penalty.
Graves finished the game with 21 saves to record his eight win of the season.
The win was the third straight for the Pointers as it pushed them to 8-10 on the season and 4-7 in NCHA play.
The Pointers and Falcons will face off again tomorrow night with the puck set to drop at 7:00 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
