Pointers Improve to 8-0 in WIAC with Win Over Blugolds

STEVENS POINT - Christin Coles (Hustisford/Hustisford) had a career best 18 points to help lead the Pointers to their eight straight victory, as the Pointers defeated UW-Eau Claire 61-46 on Wednesday night.

The Pointers defense was solid all night as they held the Blugolds to 28 percent shooting (14-49) and they forced 22 UW-Eau Claire turnovers.

The win improved to Pointers to a perfect 8-0 in the WIAC this season, where they sit one game ahead of UW-Whitewater.

The Pointers built up a 10 point halftime lead, 30-20 despite Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) picking up two fouls in the games first four minutes.  #Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.)#, the team's second leading scorer, also didn't play for the Pointers, as she missed the game due to injury.

Coles however picked up the scoring for the Pointers as she had 10 points in the first half.  Coles shot seven of nine from the field and four of five from three point range.

Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) added 11 points, while Andrea Flease (New London/New London) had seven points and a game high six assists.  Flease also had a game high six steals.

The Blugolds were led by a strong performance from Hannah Mesick, who had a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Pointers got just their second win in Eau Claire in their last seven tries.  Despite their past struggles in Eau Claire, the Pointers have been perfect away from home this season with a 9-0 record.

The Pointers will return to action on Saturday when they start their second round of games in the WIAC this season with a trip to UW-Oshkosh.  The Pointers defeated the Titans 54-42 on January 5th.  Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
