Petersen Powers Pointers Past Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR – Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) scored a game-high 21 points and Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) and Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) added 12 point each as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team cruised to an 86-63 victory over UW-Superior on Saturday afternoon.

The win improves the Pointers to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Superior drops to 6-10 overall, 0-7 in the WIAC.

UW-Stevens Point shot 45.2 percent from the floor in the game's opening half while holding the Yellowjackets to just nine made field goals and a 0-10 performance from beyond the three point arc, building a 21 point advantage, 42-21, at the half.

In the second half, the Pointers pushed in front to their largest lead, 24, at the 16:21 mark, and never let their lead dip below 17 points down the stretch as they cruised to the 23 point, 86-63, victory. 

Petersen finished the day 10-of-15 from the floor including 1-1 from three-point range on her way to 21 points. Tyler and Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) tied for the team lead in rebounds, each collecting seven. 

Superior's Kelsey Thingvold finished the day with 20 points including an 8-for-11 performance from the free throw line. 

The eighth-ranked Pointers return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 19 when they travel to Zorn Arena in Eau Claire for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Blugolds.
