SUPERIOR – Jerrel Harris (Milwaukee/Dominican) scored a team-high 19 points to help the ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team rebound with a 71-56 victory on Saturday afternoon over the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior.
The Pointers improve to 13-3 overall, 5-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The loss drops the Yellowjackets to 10-6 overall, 2-5 in conference play.
The Pointers took the lead just after the opening tip and never trailed. The host Yellowjackets kept the Pointer edge to single digits until the 2:31 mark when a Jordan Brezinski (Muskego, WI/Muskego)'s jumper gave the Pointers an 11 point, 36-25 advantage. Back-to-back three-pointers by Superior cut the Pointers lead back to single digits, and UWSP took a seven point edge into the halftime break, 38-31.
In the second half Superior cut the Pointer lead to three, 46-43 but would get no closer as UWSP pushed the lead back to double digits thanks in part to an 11-2 run. The Pointers continued to build the lead, going in front by 18 down the stretch on their way to a 15 point conference victory.
The ninth-ranked Pointers shot 50.9 percent from the floor for the game and held a 34-16 edge in bench scoring.
Harris added a team-high four assists and two steals to his team-best 19 point performance. Brezinski added 14 points in 24 minutes of work off the bench and Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) collected a team-best 10 rebounds.
Superior's Jake Smith had a team-best 14 points in the loss.
UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 19 when they host the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire in another conference showdown scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bennett Court.
