STEVENS POINT- Nick Allen of UW-Platteville made a pair of free throws to give the Pioneers a one point lead and the Pointers last shot was missed as the Pioneers edged the Pointers 57-56 Wednesday night.
UW-Platteville built up a 55-52 lead with 2:28 remaining in the game but the Pointers responded with the next four points on made field goals by Jerrel Harris and Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) to give them a 56-55 lead with 1:22 remaining.
The Pioneers turned the ball over on their next possession and then were forced to foul. UWSP missed the front end of a bonus situation and then fouled the Pioneers on the next possession.
UW-Platteville then missed two free throws and were again forced to put the Pointers on the line with 17 seconds remaining. The Pointers again missed the front end of the bonus.
Allen was then fouled on the Pioneers last possession and he connected on two free throws to give UW-Platteville the victory.
The game was close the entire way through as no team had a lead greater than five points in the second half.
Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) led the Pointers with 10 points, while Vinny Ritchay (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) and Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) had nine and eight points, respectively.
Harris led the team with four assists and Nick Krull (Marshall/Marshall) had a team high six rebounds.
The loss snapped the Pointers season long seven game winning streak and dropped them to 4-2 in WIAC play. The Pointers are now 12-3 overall.
The Pointers will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Superior to face the Yellowjackets in a WIAC contest. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
