EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Stevens Point women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the 15th-ranked Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire on Saturday afternoon. The Pointers dropped the match 25-22, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18.
A back-and-forth battle in the opening set, UW-Eau Claire (8-3, 2-1 WIAC) pulled out the eventual win.
In the second set, the Pointers jumped out to a 3-0 lead but then surrendered five straight points to the Blugolds. Tied at 15, the Pointers went on a 10-2 run to take the victory.
In the third in fourth sets the Blugolds came storming back. While the Pointers held early leads in both the final sets, Eau Claire proved to be too much as they pulled away for the victory in both sets.
Kaitlin Wolfe (Roscoe, IL/Newman Catholic) and
Kati Rau (Dorchester, WI/Colby) each tallied 11 kills on the day for the Pointers while
Chantel York (Lake Geneva/Badger) added 33 assists.
Molly Elderbrook (Burlington/Burlington) led the way with 15 digs while
Morgan Bartkowiak (Slinger, WI/Slinger) added two solo blocks and seven kills to her performance.
UW-Stevens Point (9-4, 1-2 WIAC) returns to action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25 at the RedHawk Invitational Tournament in Ripon. The Pointers will play host Ripon College in the tournament's opening match starting at 4 p.m. Friday.
