WHITEWATER – It came down to the final inning in the epic battle that had reached its 10th chapter.
Ryan Iverson scored on a suicide squeeze in the top of the ninth, breaking a 3-3 deadlock and sending the Pointers to their fourth College World Series appearance with a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Prucha field.
The Pointers, who entered the afternoon needing just one win,
dropped the opening game to the host Warhawks 9-3.
In the nightcap, the Pointers jumped in front early, plating two runs on a
Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) ground out and
Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) later came in to score on a Jason Hooper balk.
Whitewater plated a run in the bottom of the first on a Ben Kuhlmann single, plating Daniel Putnam.
The Pointers pushed their cushion back to two runs with a leadoff home run by
Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown), going in front 3-1.
The Warhawks tied the game a 3-3 in the fourth, as Mike Kenseth drove in a pair with a single down the right field line, bringing Travis Wessels and Rob Coe in to score.
From there, starter
Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door), who started the elimination game on just two day's rest, gave way to
Scott Williams (Baraboo/Baraboo), who pitched all nine innings of Thursday's game, and he held the Warhawk bats silent the rest of the way.
In the top of the ninth,
Jordan Rennicke (Mequon/Homestead)'s leadoff double gave the Pointers a base runner and Iverson came in to pinch-run. Iverson advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) put the go-ahead run at third base, with
Steve Considine (Portage/Portage) up to bat.
Considine laid down a bunt that rolled just feet in front of the plate and Iverson slid in to score, giving UWSP the 4-3 edge.
In the ninth, Williams forced a leadoff fly out and then stuck out the final two Whitewater batters swinging to seal the victory for the Pointers.
The Pointers will visit Fox City Stadium in Appleton for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 2007. The Pointers will open the 2010 World Series when they face SUNY Cortland at 10 a.m. in Appleton.
