Pointers Down Whitewater 4-3; Crowned Regional Champions

Box Score

WHITEWATER – It came down to the final inning in the epic battle that had reached its 10th chapter. Ryan Iverson scored on a suicide squeeze in the top of the ninth, breaking a 3-3 deadlock and sending the Pointers to their fourth College World Series appearance with a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Prucha field.

The Pointers, who entered the afternoon needing just one win, dropped the opening game to the host Warhawks 9-3.

In the nightcap, the Pointers jumped in front early, plating two runs on a Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) ground out and Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) later came in to score on a Jason Hooper balk.

Whitewater plated a run in the bottom of the first on a Ben Kuhlmann single, plating Daniel Putnam.

The Pointers pushed their cushion back to two runs with a leadoff home run by Brad Archambeau (Watertown/Watertown), going in front 3-1.

The Warhawks tied the game a 3-3 in the fourth, as Mike Kenseth drove in a pair with a single down the right field line, bringing Travis Wessels and Rob Coe in to score.

From there, starter Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door), who started the elimination game on just two day's rest, gave way to Scott Williams (Baraboo/Baraboo), who pitched all nine innings of Thursday's game, and he held the Warhawk bats silent the rest of the way.

In the top of the ninth, Jordan Rennicke (Mequon/Homestead)'s leadoff double gave the Pointers a base runner and Iverson came in to pinch-run. Iverson advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) put the go-ahead run at third base, with Steve Considine (Portage/Portage) up to bat.

Considine laid down a bunt that rolled just feet in front of the plate and Iverson slid in to score, giving UWSP the 4-3 edge.

In the ninth, Williams forced a leadoff fly out and then stuck out the final two Whitewater batters swinging to seal the victory for the Pointers.
