19 Hits Power Pointers To NCAA Regional Victory

by Travis Vander Loop - Sports Information Assistant

WHITEWATER – The Pointers showed the NCAA Division III Tournamet selection committee they were worthy of a spot in this year's field by rebounding from a disappointing second day at the WIAC Tournament, belting out 19 hits and cruising to a 12-1 victory on first day of the NCAA Regionals Wednesday afternoon at Prucha Field.

UW-Stevens Point 12 - St. Scholastica 1

In a rematch of the 2009 NCAA Regional game, the Saints of St. Scholastica (38-7) and the Pointers from UW-Stevens Point (30-15) squared off on day one of the regional finals.

The Pointers jumped out the gates early in the top half of the first when their first five batters reached base safely. Brad Archambeau (Watertown) led off the game with a double off the left centerfield wall and Eric Fritz (Custer) followed up with an infield single to put two on for Justin Jirschele (Clintonville). Jirschele was in a 1-2 hole, but managed to doubled down the left field line, bringing home Archambeau to give the Pointers an early 1-0 lead. The next batter, Sam Spurney (Manitowoc), took a Jeff Adams offering and turned it around for his sixth home run of the season, giving Point a 4-0 after one half inning of play.

UW-Stevens Point waited until the fifth inning to tack on more runs when Spurney singled to center with one out. Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) then connected on a 1-1 pitch, hooking it inside the left field foul pole for his 10th home run of the season, a new career high, for a 6-0 Pointer advantage.

Point kept their hot sticks rolling right into the sixth inning as they were able to add three more runs on four hits. The Pointers continued a familiar trend with two outs as Richter came through in the clutch, doubling to left-center field, bringing home Spurney and Fritz. Jordan Rennicke (Mequon) delivered another two out hit on a single to score Richter as the Pointers took a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth.

St. Scholastica put their first threat of the game together in the bottom of the sixth when they put one on with a single and Sean Claugherty drew a one out walk off Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay). Delorit however, was able to force the next two batters into a foul out and a groundout, ending the Saints threat.

In the top half of the eighth, Michael Swenson retired the first two Pointers, but that did not stop them from adding on again. Richter and Rennicke both singled and Jared Surman (Kimberly) delivered with a pinch-hit double down the left field line to plate one. Dan Douglas (East Troy) then drove Rennicke and Surman on a double to left centerfield, increasing Point's lead to 12-0.

The Saints were able to avoid being shutout for the first time in 2010 in the ninth as Jordan Sandstrom grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to score one run. Jack Archie (Brookfield) recorded the final out as he forced a popout to second base, ending the game with a 12-1 final.

Delorit (8-3) continued his dominating month of May as he allowed just two hits over seven innings. In four games this month, he has a 4-0 record, allowing 20 hits and two earned runs while striking out 29 batters in 30 innings. The junior right-hander also pitched the Pointers to a 9-3 victory last year against the Saints when as he went eight innings, allowing seven hits and no earned runs while striking out eight on the third day of the NCAA Regionals.

Jeff Adams (8-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed 14 hits, nine runs, all earned, in 5.2 innings.

Of the Pointers 19 hits, six of the nine starters recorded two or more.  Richter led the club on the day with a single, double and home run, scored three runs while driving in four. Spurney drove in three runs on three hits and Douglas also added three hits and two RBIs. Archambeau, Fritz and Rennicke each contributed with two hit games.

St. Scholastica suffered their worst loss since March 18th when the fell to Rutgers-Camden in Ft. Pierce, Fla. by a score of 20-9.

With UW-Stevens Point's victory, they reached the 30-win mark for the fifth time in six years. They will continue their season on Thursday as they take on St. Thomas (34-7) as they defeated Carthage College 14-6 in their first game. Last season, the Pointers and Tommie's squared off in the NCAA Regionals twice in Oshkosh. St. Thomas took game one 5-4 in a 17 inning thriller and won the second game 6-0. First pitch for Thursday's game is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Whitewater.
