STEVENS POINT – The Pointers hit four home runs on Wednesday afternoon, including a two-run shot by former Titan
Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) in the sixth, but it was not enough as UW-Stevens Point fell to UW-Oshkosh 13-10 in the first game of scheduled doubleheader.
The second game was suspended at the end of the fourth inning due to inclement weather. UW-Stevens Point was leading 11-1. The contest will resume at 11 a.m. on April 14 at Tiedemann Field in Oshkosh. Two other games between the two teams will also be played that day.
The 19th ranked Pointers fell behind early in the day's opening game, as Oshkosh jumped in front 5-0 in the opening inning. The Titans continued to add to their lead, pushing the advantage to 13-5 heading into the final inning.
In that final frame, the Pointers belted two home runs, a solo shot by
Jeremy Richter (Rosholt/Rosholt) and a three-run blast by
Sam Spurney (Manitowoc/Manitowoc Lincoln), cutting the deficit to just three, before the Titans ended the threat and the game.
The Pointers out-hit the Titans 16-11 on the day.
Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) finished the day 4-for-5 with three runs scored while
Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH), Spurney and Jirschele each had multiple hits.
Kyle Kannenberg earned the win for the Titans, going the distance for the 16 hit victory. He walked just two batters and struck out three. He allowed just one extra base hit besides the four home runs in the game.
Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) suffered the loss, giving up eight runs on six hits, striking out six.
Ryan Povlick (Greendale/Greendale) pitched the final three innings, allowing five runs on five hits, walking three and striking out two.
The Pointers will take on UW-Platteville on Saturday, April 10 in the home opener at University Field in Stevens Point. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for a Noon start.
