STEVENS POINT – The Pointers scored 11 runs and used a walk-off two-run home run from
Jared Surman in the bottom of the eighth to salvage a split of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader against the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior. Superior won the opening game 10-5 before UW-Stevens Point came back to secure the series victory in an 11-1 run-shortened eight inning affair.
The split pushes UW-Stevens Point's record to 18-7 overall, 9-3 in the WIAC. Superior falls to 10-11 on the season, 3-5 in the WIAC.
The Pointers held an early 1-0 lead until Superior broke the game open in the fourth inning, plating six runs to take the five run lead. The Yellowjackets added two more runs in the fifth and runs in the eighth and ninth innings to keep the Pointers at bay, securing the 10-5 victory.
Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) (3-3) suffered the loss, throwing six innings and striking out a career-high 12 batters. He allowed 11 hits and eight runs, four earned, walking three.
Max Mittelstaedt (Oshkosh, WI/Oshkosh North) came on to pitch two innings in relief and
Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) also pitched an inning.
Offensively,
Jeremy Richter (Rosholt/Rosholt) and Fritz each tallied three hits.
Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) and
Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) each added two in the loss.
In game two it was the Pointers who put on an offensive showcase, scoring three in the third and two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-1 lead. After plating a run in the seventh, the Pointers got a two-run shot from Surman to end the game via the 10-run rule, 11-1.
Tyler Lorenz (Pembine/Pembine-Goodman) (4-2) earned the victory, pitching seven innings of five hit ball, allowing one run and striking out five.
Jack Archie (Brookfield/Marquette) came in for one inning of relief, recording a strikeout and walking one.
Surman finished game two with three RBI on a 3-for-5 day while Douglas, Jirschele and
Jordan Rennicke (Mequon/Homestead) each had two RBI in the victory.
The 21st-ranked Pointers return to action on Wednesday, April 21 when they host Edgewood College in a nonconference tilt beginning at 1 p.m. at University Field. The Pointers then travel to UW-Whitewater for a showdown of the WIAC frontrunners on Saturday and Sunday.
