OSHKOSH – The 21st ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team pounded out 15 hits in a 11-6 victory in game one and followed up with a 16 hit performance, including a natural cycle from Eric Fritz (Custer), and a 14-4 win to complete a doubleheader sweep against UW-Oshkosh Wednesday afternoon at Tiedemann Field.

The Pointers wasted no time in game one as they strung together three hits in the opening inning to plate three runs before the Titans stepped up to the plate. Brad Archambeau (Watertown) began the scoring as he lined a single to left with Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI) coming home to score. Sam Spurney (Manitowoc) stepped up two batters latter and knocked a single back up the middle scoring Archambeau and Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) giving Point a 3-0 lead.

UW-Oshkosh answered back with three runs on a double from Derek Hiroskey and RBI singles by Doug Beattie and Mickey Fadness tied the game up at 3-3.

The Pointers were able to reclaim the lead in the top half of the third as Spurney stroked another two-run single up the middle with Archambeau and Richter crossing the plate again. Jordan Rennicke (Mequon) scored the third run of the inning when Jared Surman (Kimberly) grounded into a double play leaving the score at 6-3 after two and a half complete.

Douglas was able to add one more run as he scored on a wild pitch after he lined his second double of the game to left field earlier in the inning.

In the top half of the seventh the Pointers were able to give themselves some breathing room as they put four more runs on the board with four hits. Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI) led off the inning, reaching on a hit by pitch, and came around to score on Fritz's third hit of the game. Richer, Archambeau and Rennicke then strung together three consecutive RBI singles, pushing the lead to 11-3.

The Titans tried to get back in the game as they pushed across two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth but the Pointers 11 runs were too much to overcome, resulting in a 6-11 final.

Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay) (3-2) picked up the win as he allowed two earned runs while striking out six in seven innings. Point was able to rough up Titans starter Kyle Kannenberg (3-3) as he surrendered 10 earned runs in seven innings of work.

Point was led by Fritz, Archambeau and Spurney as they each had three hits while Douglas, Richter and Rennicke added two apiece. Spurney also knocked in four of the 11 runs for the Pointers in game one.

Blake Berger, Hiroskey and Fadness led the Titans in the hit column, all with two each.

In the nightcap the Pointers jumped out to an early lead once again, scoring two runs before the Titans even stepped into the box. Fritz reached on a bunt single and was driven in one batter later by Richter who belted his fifth home run of the season.

The Pointers were able to push across another run in the second, started by back-to-back two-out walks by Steve Considine (Portage) and Travis Tuschen (Sun Prairie, WI). Douglas then took a pitch from Titans pitcher Luke Westphal and lined a single to left field scoring Considine.

With Point leading 3-0 after two, Kannenberg and Hiroskey knocked home two Titans with a sacrifice fly and a base hit respectfully to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Titans then went to the bullpen in the fourth as Matt Wells was called on to keep the game in reach. Point had other ideas as they exploded for five runs thanks to RBI doubles by Fritz and Archambeau and a run-scoring single from Richter, resulting in a Wells exit from the game.

Douglas was able to tack on one more run in the top of the fifth as he lined his second run-scoring single into left field extending Point's lead to 9-2.

Both teams were held scoreless until the Titans seventh inning as they were able to chase Pointers starter Tyler Lorenz (Pembine) from the game. UW-Oshkosh was able to push across two runs in the inning as a sacrifice fly by Berger plated the first run and a wild pitch from Ryan Povlick (Greendale) allowed another run to score.

In the eighth UW-Stevens Point was able to get one run back as Fritz knocked a triple down the right field line and Richter added his game-high fifth RBI of the evening on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Point continued their stellar offensive day as they scored four runs in the top of the ninth to give themselves a 14-4 lead heading into the bottom half. Kevin Thomas (Oshkosh) drove in a pair as he lined a pinch-hit single to center scoring Jirschele and Rennicke. Fritz stepped up to the plate two batters later and with only needing a home run to complete a rare natural cycle, he turned around a Troy Mrkvicka pitch around and drove it over the left field fence completing the feat on his fifth home run of the season, tying him for the team lead with Richter.

Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire) recorded the final three outs in the ninth to give the Pointers a 14-4 victory and a doubleheader sweep of the Titans.

Lorenz improved his record to 3-2 on the year with the victory as he went six and one third innings allowing only three hits and giving up four earned runs. Povlick and Iverson pitched the final two and two thirds innings as they allowed one hit apiece.

Fritz led the way with four hits, ending a career day with seven, and three RBIs and Jirschele added three against his former team. Richter also knocked in five in game two bringing his season total to a team-high 27 for the season.

The Pointers pounded out 15 hits in game one and followed up that performance with 16 in the second game.

Hiroskey was led the Titans with two hits as they only managed five in the nightcap.

Before the Pointers and Titans squared off in their doubleheader they completed a suspended game from April 7th. Point was ahead 11-1 when the game was suspended and added four more runs in the final three innings to defeat the Titans 15-1 in seven.

Richter restarted the Pointers offensive attack in the fifth with a three-run home run to push the lead to 14-1. He also added one more run in the seventh on an RBI single to left, scoring Thomas.

Scott Williams (Baraboo) (5-0) received up the win going four innings, allowing one earned run with five strikeouts before the rains came. Eric Van Beck (Hartland) earned the save by closing out the final three innings allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out four.

Fritz led the team with three hits along with Richter, who included a home run, while Jirschele and Josh Krueger (Portage) connected with their second home runs of the season. Richter also added four RBIs in the game and Surman and Jirschele were in on the action with three each.

UW-Stevens Point (15-6, 6-2 WIAC) will return to action this Saturday as they host a doubleheader against UW-Superior for another conference showdown. Game time is set for a noon start at University Field.
