Pointers Split Season Opener at Metrodome

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

MINNEAPOLIS – Scott Williams (Baraboo/Baraboo) went five innings allowing just four hits and struck out four and Jared Surman (Kimberly/Kimberly) went 1-4 with a grand slam as the Pointers opened the season with a 13-5 victory over the Oles of St. Olaf. The Pointers dropped game two of the doubleheader at the Metrodome 4-0.

The Pointers, ranked 11th in the latest D3baseball.com poll, brought out the bats early, as reigning WIAC Position Player of the Year Jeremy Richter (Rosholt/Rosholt) drove in two runs in the bottom of the first inning with a single to left. Jordan Rennicke (Mequon/Homestead)'s sacrifice fly made the score 3-1 after the first inning.

St. Olaf added a pair of runs in the second to tie the score at three and added one more in the third to take the lead before Stevens Point tied the game at four in the bottom of the fifth with another Rennicke RBI.

Olaf battled back to take the lead in the top of the sixth, but the bats came out for the Pointers in the bottom of the frame as the UWSP brought 13 batters to the plate in the frame, hanging a nine on the scoreboard to jump in front 13-5.

Tyler Lorens pitched the final two innings for the Pointers, allowing just one run without giving up a hit, striking out two, to secure the win.

In the nightcap, Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door) allowed four runs on three hits while striking out five, but suffered the loss as the Pointer bats were silenced by St. Olaf's Anders Dzurak, who threw five scoreless innings to secure the split.

Eric Fritz (Custer/SPASH) finished game two with three hits while Sam Spurney (Manitowoc/Manitowoc Lincoln) and Kevin Thomas (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) each collected a pair of hits in the loss.

The Pointers return to action on March 21 when they take on Washington & Jefferson College in Auburndale, Fla. in the first doubleheader of their spring trip.
