Eagles Soar Past Pointers

Box Score

LA CROSSE – The Eagles started the second half on a 19-0 run and held the Pointers to just 6-of-27 shooting in the second stanza as UW-La Crosse secured a home game in the 2010 WIAC tournament and kept the Pointer women's basketball team from winning back-to-back regular season conference titles with a 72-53 victory Saturday afternoon.

The loss by UW-Stevens Point gives UW-Whitewater the outright Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament. The Pointers, who finish the season with an 11-5 mark in league play, secure the No. 2 seed and will host a semifinal match-up on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. in Berg Gym.

La Crosse opened the game on a 13-2 run and went in front by 10 at the 8:24 mark of the game's opening half, 22-12, before the Pointers began to chip away at the lead and tied the game at 24-24 with 3:32 reaming in the first stanza.

From there, the Pointers pushed in front by five, 29-24 before going into the halftime locker room with a three point edge, 33-30.

In the second half, it was all Eagles, as they shot 46.7 percent from the floor, knocking down five of their nine three-point field goal attempts as they snapped an eight game losing streak against the Pointers, pulling away for the 19 point victory.

Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) led the Pointers with 13 points on the day while Josi Schultz (Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) and Liz Althoff (Darien, WI/Clinton) each added 10 in the loss. Petersen also collected a team-high 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

Dana Churchill led five scorers in double figures for the Eagles, scoring 16 points on the day.

UW-Stevens Point will host a yet to be determined opponent on Thursday at Berg Gym as part of a men's and women's doubleheader.
